Homemade BBQ Sauce

Turn every meal into a BBQ feast with this rich, smoky, and tangy Homemade BBQ Sauce! It's sweet, savory, and packed with bold flavor, making it the perfect companion for grilled meats, burgers, chicken, fries, sandwiches, and roasted vegetables. Made with simple pantry ingredients, this easy sauce comes together in just minutes and tastes even better than store-bought.

Ingredients

  • 200 g (¾ cup) tomato ketchup
  • 50 g (3½ tbsp) brown sugar
  • 60 ml (4 tbsp) apple cider vinegar
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) Worcestershire sauce
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) soy sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced (about 2 tsp)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) water

Instructions

  1. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, salt, and water to a medium saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously until the brown sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens. Add a little extra water if you prefer a thinner consistency.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the BBQ sauce to cool completely.
  5. Transfer the cooled sauce to a clean glass jar or airtight container and refrigerate.
  6. Serve as a dipping sauce, sandwich spread, or glaze for grilled chicken, ribs, burgers, vegetables, or your favorite BBQ dishes.

Tips

  • For a smokier flavor, add ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika or a few drops of liquid smoke.
  • For extra heat, stir in a pinch of cayenne pepper or your favorite hot sauce.
  • The flavor develops even more after chilling overnight.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks in a sealed container.
